Brain fog

The foggy, slowed-down thinking - poor memory, concentration and word-finding - that many people get with thyroid problems.

"Brain fog" is the everyday name for a cluster of thinking problems that are very common with both an under- and over-active thyroid: trouble concentrating, a patchy short-term memory, losing your thread mid-sentence, and a general sense of thinking through treacle. It is one of the most-reported thyroid symptoms - and one of the most dismissed.

It is real and physical, not laziness or "just stress". Thyroid hormones help regulate how the brain works, so when levels are off - or while treatment is still settling - cognition can genuinely suffer.

Brain fog often lags behind your blood results: your levels can look "normal" on paper while the fog is still lifting. For most people it eases as treatment is optimised, though it can take time. If it is severe or not improving, it is worth raising with your clinician.
